Being a parent for 3 kids, we go through a lot of shoes.  At their age, it's less about fashion and more about how well the shoes hold up in their daily activities. Flip-flops don't work.  They flip-flop back and forth.  We had a couple of other sandals where the sole just ripped apart from the rest of the sandal since my middle child ran around with it too much. For water play, sandals need to be at least water resistant.  That rules out a lot of leather sandals.
